Open Mic

HotHouse member Jaylene Clark Owens will hold the first in an ongoing series of Open Mics based on the themes of the shows in the current Wilma Theater season. Participants are encouraged to see the show during the first week of performances (Jan 15-20) and then create pieces inspired by the show to share at the Open Mic. Pieces can include poetry, artwork, or songs inspired by the themes of Romeo and Juliet.

Each Open Mic will also have a feature. Our first feature is Jasmine “Mizz Jasz” Hawkins is a Philly-bred educator, writer, curator, spoken word artist, and community organizer. Jasz serves as president and founder of the non-profit Urgent 365 Inc., author of Urgent Conversations: Race, Reality, and Responsibility, and host of the weekly open mic Pecola Breedlove and the Freedom Party. Through writing, teaching and Urgent 365, Jasz aims to push communities of color forward by facilitating dialogue that incites introspection and action. Jasz has been featured as a poet and curator in many cities and universities including Philadelphia, Chicago, Wilmington and Washington D.C. Her work and heart are grounded in the empowerment of women and the social climate of the Black community as a whole.

If you are interested in participating in the Open Mic contact wilmaopenmic@gmail.com. A sign up list for the Open Mic will be available at the door on the day of the event as well.
