Lead Artistic Director Morgan Green introduces the 2022-23 Season

Hi Everyone!

I’m happy to announce the Wilma Theater’s 2022-2023 Season: five plays jam-packed with intellect and feeling. Many brilliant and generous voices contributed to the process of selecting this year’s offerings, from both new and returning Wilma artists. These plays asks probing questions of theater itself: Whose stories can we tell and for whom? What is the nature of laughter and how does it heal? How can we leave a place better than we found it?

Our season will open with Those With 2 Clocks, created and performed by Tall Order (Jennifer Kidwell, Jess Conda, and Mel Krodman). This collaborative trio will bring us together with their bawdy comedy founded in a sincere interrogation and reflection of the patriarchy

School Pictures is up next: a moving and idiosyncratic one-person musical created and performed by playwright, Milo Cramer, which I’m thrilled to direct. Milo sings sincerely and outrageously about his tutoring students who are subject to the unfair pitfalls of the New York City competitive school system and also puberty.

We will kick off the new year with Kiss, Guillermo Calderón’s brilliant play, directed by Fadi Skeiker. The story centers on a group of American actors performing a Syrian soap opera who discover the limits of their own cultural understanding when they investigate further. The layered metatheatricality in the play, coupled with Fadi’s personal and expressive directing style, will elicit a range of stylized performances from our amazing HotHouse company, not to be missed.

Eternal Life Part 1 is a new play by Nathan Alan Davis, which I’m also excited to direct. It’s a delicate and inspired depiction of a family in the near future, doing their best to live, love, and parent. Buoyed by whimsical characters such an idealistic young snowflake and a hungry goose, this playful story takes a sincere look at how we intend to live our lives.

Lastly, we’ll put up a celebratory Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare, directed by our own Co-Artistic Director Yury Urnov, who plans to set this beloved romantic comedy about twins separated by a shipwreck on the beach. This story is about getting to the other side of grief, and moving towards reunion and resolution.

This season, we will celebrate the unique qualities of live performance: design, music, movement, and surprise. We will rejoice in sharing space and telling stories. Please join us!
