Workshop Description

This 2-week scene study workshop is intended for the experienced actor – from Intermediate to Advanced – to share space with fellow theatre artists seeking to deepen their skills, practice their craft, and dive into experimental exploration. Participants will move, play, and collaborate with classmates to investigate scenes from contemporary plays. Tailored instruction will include in-class exercises in scoring scene work, responding authentically to an acting partner, and unlocking new ways of working on plays. Students will also be exposed to theatre methodologies employed by The Wilma’s resident company of actors and directors, The HotHouse. Training under acclaimed Philadelphia and Barrymore award-winning actor and director Justin Jain, this short intensive workshop will joyfully celebrate the process of investigating scene work, while embracing the spirit of ensemble and collaboration – core values of The Wilma Theatre.

During the course of 5 sessions over two weeks, students will:

  • Partner to explore scene work from contemporary plays
  • Engage with techniques in actor training and script analysis
  • Connect with concepts in a collaborative environment
  • Become more confident in full-bodied exploration and risk taking in rehearsals
  • Receive individual and tailored coaching and feedback through the work

More about this class:

It is imperative for registered participants to work and rehearse scenes with their assigned partners outside of the class sessions. These meeting times are at the discretion and location of each unique pair. Please be advised that the more work that is done outside of the studio, the further we can go in-session. Students are expected to meet a minimum of one rehearsal per week outside of the classroom hours.

Upon registration, you will be asked to fill out a quick intake form stating your interest in the course and demonstration of previous experience.
