Workshop Description

Nerd out with Associate Artistic Director Kellie Mecleary for three nights of dramaturgy fundamentals. In this course, you will:

  • Learn how to identify and explore pertinent research topics for a production with equal doses integrity and pleasure
  • Consider methods for sharing research with artists and audiences
  • Get hands-on experience working with a director (featuring guest appearances from the Wilma’s cohort of Artistic Directors!)

 More about this class:

This class is best suited for early-career dramaturgs looking to hone or develop their skills, and theater artists (playwrights, directors, actors) who want grounding in dramaturgy as a complement to their practice. Students will be required to do some preparation outside of the course, including reading one play and outlining research topics.  By the end of the course, students will have a roadmap for dramaturgical work which they can adapt for future productions, the ability to confidently identify strong vs weak sources, and increased confidence in determining how best to support directors. The course will be a mix of lectures and hands-on dramaturgy work, culminating in a mock pre-rehearsal meeting with a Wilma Artistic Director, planning for a project they will direct.
