The Convert

Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company’s THE CONVERT
by Danai Gurira
directed by Michael John Garcés

October 9 – November 10, 2013

From Obie Award-winning playwright Danai Gurira (ECLIPSED, IN THE CONTINUUM) comes a rich, unflinching, yet compassionate story. Set in 1895 amid the colonial scramble for Southern Africa, the play follows Jekesai, a young girl who escapes a forced marriage arrangement and discovers Christianity under the guidance of an African teacher. However, as anti-colonial sentiments rise to a boiling point, Jekesai must choose between her new God and the spirits of her ancestors. “An impressive new work by an impressive young playwright” (THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER), THE CONVERT examines complex cultural and religious collisions that shaped the post-colonial world, the reverberations of which are still felt throughout the world today.

“…to the literati, Danai Gurira also is one of the most promising young playwrights in contemporary American theater, with a growing body of critically acclaimed plays, including In the Continuum and Eclipsed, that illuminate, with stark dramatic contrasts, some of the harrowing issues facing sub-Saharan Africa.”

“For me it was about exploring my history. Who would I have been if I was alive at that time?” the Zimbabwean-American actress said. “The Convert” “focuses on that time through the prism of this one girl’s experience, being someone who grew up in postcolonial Zimbabwe, the melding of identity, the clash of culture in the African identity.”
