by Doug Wright directed by Blanka Zizka
September 14 – October 23, 2005
I Am My Own Wife originally workshopped at the Wilma in 2001. Since then, it has played to rave reviews in New York and Chicago, and gone on to win numerous awards, including a Tony® Award and the Pulitzer Prize. Now Doug Wright’s (Barrymore Award Winner, Quills) thought-provoking tour de force about survival and the quest for truth returns to the Wilma in a completely re-imagined full production.
Doug Wright became fascinated by an amazing German transvestite, Charlotte von Mahlsdorf – How did Charlotte outlast her father, World War II and the Cold War while preserving the history around her in her own museum? I Am My Own Wife is a bittersweet look at how, through cunning and charm, Charlotte defied the iron grip of both the Nazi and Communist regimes.
