Announcing 2023-24 Season, and Lindsay Smiling as new Co-Artistic Director

April 14, 2023

Dear Friend of the Wilma,

We are so thrilled to announce our 2023-24 Season, which contains two world premieres, a reclaimed classic, and the Philadelphia on-stage premiere of James Ijames’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play Fat Ham

Before we tell you more about the season, we have a big announcement: Lindsay Smiling, an original Wilma HotHouse Company Member and beloved member of the Philadelphia theatre community, will join Morgan Green and Yury Urnov as Co-Artistic Directors, leading the Wilma alongside Managing Director Leigh Goldenberg.

Adding a Wilma HotHouse Company Member into a leadership role in the organization is an exciting step to bring our incredible local talent to the forefront of our organization, while also evolving our groundbreaking shared leadership model.

As we welcome Lindsay to this new role, we want to take a moment to recognize James Ijames, who steps down from this role at the Wilma. We are so proud of James’ wild success, and thrilled that our relationship with him will continue as we start our season with the Philadelphia premiere of his joyful comedy, Fat Ham, which we originally premiered as a filmed production during the lockdown, directed by Morgan Green, prior to its Broadway run.

Two of our other 2023-24 shows – My Mama and the Full-Scale Invasion and Hilma – are daring world premieres, just as Fat Ham was when we premiered it. My Mama… is an urgent, fantastical, and deeply personal play set during the early days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Hilma is a contemporary opera about abstract painter Hilma af Klint, a brilliant artist ignored in her time. The fourth show of our season, The Good Person of Setzuan, is Tony Kushner’s musical adaptation of Brecht’s classic fable, reclaimed by Director Justin Jain, another HotHouse member.

Don’t miss out on this electrifying season – prices will increase June 1. Subscribe today online or by calling our helpful box office staff at 215-546-7824.

Thank you for being part of the Wilma audience and community! We take bold risks, and we can only do so because you take them along with us.

Sincerely,

Morgan Green, Lindsay Smiling, Yury Urnov
